Racism in Adoption

I felt so blessed to be asked to guest post on Tina Tyra’s site this week.

Tina is the executive director of, A Labor of Love Adoptions. As the co-owner of a licensed adoption agency, Tina has done the remarkable work, for over 18 years, of facilitating adoptions.

My article entitled “Racism in Adoption,” highlights our particular family’s journey in dealing with society in specific relation to trans-racial adoption.

We understand that each region, family, & unique circumstance carries both it’s advantages and struggles.

Our desire is that through sharing the truth of our own personal experiences, people will become more aware, receptive, and open to trans-racial adoption in years to come.

Thank you Tina for giving me this wonderful opportunity!

  1. I am so sorry you have gone through all this. It is sad and a disgrace to our society. But I am glad you are ‘holding your head up high.’ May God bless you for your heart of compassion.

  2. Hi Jen. I went over to read your whole post. Its amazing how judgmental we can be if we don’t understand or fear. Over here, most babies available for adoption are of colour so in our more ‘white’ neighbourhoods you see more and more mixed race adoptions so people are getting used to it.
I think you and your family are an amazing example and maybe because of you more adoptions like these will take place. Praying for you guys always.
    God bless

  3. Shanda – Thanks so much for reading.
Tracy – So glad to hear mixed race adoption is not uncommon in your area. Thank you for your reading. Always such a great support & encouragement! ~ Jen

  4. Thanks for sharing your story. My experience is very similar, having a foster daughter that we are going to adopt. I have been reading online that I should not be adopting my little darling because I am not of the same race, and I even read an adoptee blogger that said people with biological children should not adopt. I have also been very discouraged, but you are totally right! I know that God has given my daughter to me, and I will also try to take advantage of our family as a witness to God’s goodness. What a blessing your post has been.

  5. Just read your article. Love! We recently adopted a bi-racial newborn. So far the worst comment we’ve gotten is “What is she?” I know what they mean, but it makes me think of a dog breed. πŸ™‚ Anyway, thank you for sharing your experiences and your heart.

  6. Liza – Am finding…no matter what people do, there is always a skeptic out there & someone who disapproves anyway! I just keep remembering how good God was to adopt me, while still yet a sinner! And am finding personally that the things we do not for public approval but in obedience to His call often bring the greatest rewards! Congratulations to you for opening your home & your heart! Would love to hear more of your story in the future!
    Many Blessings!
    Jen

  7. JenB – Thanks for reading! Thrilled to hear you recently adopted! Congratulations! Oh & btw…Love your name!

  9. I know I am late to the party but I am going through similar issues right now in the south. We have a multiracial family and the odd looks happen when hubby is with us but the comments and racist remarks happen a couple times a month when I am out alone with my daughter…it is beyond disgusting that this goes on…I think the only way this is ever going to get better is if we keep talking about it- people need to be aware of the racism in this country and not turn a blind eye to it….thank you so much for your post!
