In a World of Identity Theft #UNITE Link-Up

“This is the fraud department, wanting to confirm some recent activity on your account.”

The exct words you don’t want to hear late at night, after dropping your daughter off at youth group.

I ignored the call. Afterall, fraud is something that happens to other people….isn’t it?

Not me.

But again, a few minutes later…

This is the fraud department….” The same message, from the same phone number.

I started to worry. Know that if I call them back, and give too mucg information, a hacker could use it all against me.

Who do we trust? How, on this road of life, do we know who is dependable, or not?

In a world of so much corruption, where do we place your allegiance? Who do we lean on? When should we give or offer the most secret information we have to?

So instead, sometimes, we hide….

Lock away our trust, and keep our lives at a bare minimum, hidden, out of the way. Never reaching, never giving, never letting anyone sneak into the crevasses of our minds…

In hopes they don’t steal our most prized possession…our identity.

We say, “We are good” this way. But, are we?

Wasn’t Adam found wanting, when He created Eve? Doesn’t “man” need others beside them, to help them find the answers, being stronger as a cord of three?

So, I called my husband. Told him of the situation. Asked if he could check it out and explained my concerns of calling back this number, offering too much information.

He called our bank, and sure enough, someone was posing, with our identity.

A stranger took our account number, and was having a hayday with it, charging so much, it alerted our bank’s securtiy department…

2de726a36d4291824557e729afc575cbSo, they stopped our account. And confirmed this stranger wasn’t us.

But still, I wonder…

In a society of imposters and wolves, in a world of posers, and pretenders, and inauthentic people pretending to be other people….

Who do we trust? Where do we give? How can we live, in a world out to steal our identity?

And as I think about this concept, this world of lives with stolen identities, it seems the first plot of the enemy, is to make us cower, forcing us to shrink back….

His goal? Intimidate us so we will hide in fear, silent as children of God, keeping our faith hidden under a lamp, as if we alone are the protectors of our identities.

Yet, God has called His people; bold, confident, fearless, unafraid of evil that seeks to rob us from name.

And have we forgotten that God is Sovereign?

Ephesians :21 says He is, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion [whether angelic or human], and [far above] every name that is named [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and world but also in the one to come.

Did you read that? God has dominion over everything.

The definition for “Dominion” is: “Sovereing control”, “rule over territories and governments”, or another term for it is, “Domination”.

So, why do we fear?

Psalms 22:28 says, “Dominion belongs to the Lord, and He rules over the nations”.

Still, sometimes, don’t we live as if we are protectors of our own castles, called to be warriors, defending our own selves from darkness?

Living as if we alone has power or resources, instead of resting and retreating, hiding ourselves in the sovereignty of God?

Still scripture says, where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. There is peace.

Knowing He rules, we can rest, fully trusting, we don’t have to fear anything.

However, today, like me and my bank card, have we lost our identity? Stripped from the power and confidence of who we are in Christ…left feeling weak and defenseless?

Please know, today, friends….our identity isn’t in our bank account, our theology, our position, or how many friends we have on Facebook.

Our identity is found in Jesus.

And He says…

  • There is no condemnation in Him. (Romans 8:1)
  • We have been set free from the law, from sin and death. (Romans 8:2)
  • In Him we have righteousness, sanctification, redemption and wisdom. (1 Cor. 1:30)
  • We are children of God. (John 1:12)
  • We are not longer slaves to sin and fear. (Gal. 4:8)
  • We have boldness and confident through faith in Jesus. (Eph. 3:12)
  • And friends….we are citizen’s in heaven. (Phil 3:20)

On and on Christ reveals His love for us through Scripture. He loved us so much, He died, even when we were sinner.

He washes us in His truth, if we bask in the glory of His words, instead of listening to a world that likes to lie and deceive us, one wanting to rob and steal our very identity in Him.

The bank card theft didn’t faze us. We had the filter of our bank, that was on the lookout for odd

and suspicious activity. It’s protection covered everything that was stolen.

In the same way, we have a Jesus, that watches, guards and protects us from an enemy lurking to rob us from our identity.

So, let’s be bold and brave. Let’s stand up and stop shrinking as if we don’t serve a God who has dominion and sovereignty over everything.

Let’s rise up and be what God has called us to; adored, dearly loved, chosed, and blessed by the One who rules all of creation.

He has work for us to do. It’s time to stand, rise.

So, let’s come out from the shadows and walk, confident, in our true identity.

  1. So thankful that an identity with its foundation in Christ can never be stolen. And it occurs to me that, like Him, we must be continually giving ourselves away.
I’m glad that your bank detected the problem – hopefully it’s over now!
