Why My Daughter Insists She is NEVER Coming Home!

I get her text. “I am never, ever, ever, never coming home.”

And I knew she was hooked. Full blown.  Undone.  In love.

Only sixteen. From a family who doesn’t practice dating…..But, I knew when she saw him, her heart would be mush melting.  And all logic.  Useless.

After all, she is my daughter. And go figure.  The same thing that hooked me. Hooked her.

Crazier yet, he is from Mexico.  Brown eyes, sweet smile. No wonder she fell head over heals.

Only eighteen days.  Son home.  After a year away.  Entire family complete again……And off and running was my sixteen year old daughter…..

To Mexico.

And although the pictures of drug cartel and the horrendous images of what goes on South of the border made me want to instruct my daughter to stay home.

How could I now let her go?

I remember. Not to long ago. Her coming out of her room. Stating profusely…. “That settles it. I am supposed to go to Mexico.”

So sure.  So matter of fact.  Complete resolve.  Like I have never seen in her before.

Now the rest of us, in our family I can imagine this from.  But not her.

  • She is the free one.
  • The creative one.
  • The one who can’t be pinned down my mere facts and figures.  (But then again…maybe that’s why it was her called to Mexico?)

And it was there.  Bible open.  Psalms.  She got the call to “go” from her reading that morning.

So, who was I to stop her?  Stop God?  From what He wanted to do?

And now she is down there. After driving 1 1/2 hours south of the border. Sleeping in tents. Living inside an orphanage….

For the sake of serving those she has just met.

Her text announcing….

Not only is she, “never, ever, ever, never coming back.”  But, “I am bringing back all these kids….especially Ernesto.” A child from the orphanage.

Yes, she is in love.

  •  In love with the heart of God.
  • In love with the one’s He loves.
  • In love with His mission to “go” and “serve”.

….And this Mother…..

Couldn’t be happier.

Mark 10:45   “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,
but to serve,
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

  1. Oh, I’m packing my bags and joining her! My thirteen year old sent a text from Honduras this winter (where he was working alongside my husband on a medical mission)- “Found a little brother for us all… can I bring him home?”

We’re still praying for adoption laws to change in HOnduras- may just empty out that whole orphanage someday ๐Ÿ™‚

Love the way you trust your children into the Father’s hand. Thanks for the inspiration here. Always.

  2. Ah, what courageous parents you are to let her go … and stay home and pray. What a wonderful experience she is having. My husband and I took students overseas for 20 … so many lives changed.

And the reunion and stories when she comes home …joy.

    fondly,
    Glenda

  3. Alicia – Thanks for sharing about your son in Honduras. So good to pray that more closed countries will be open to adoption. I so connect with your heart…wanting to adopt them all. May adoption continue to grow among the Christian community, as HE so ever graciously chose to adopt us…while we were still yet sinners. The best adoption story ever! ๐Ÿ™‚

Glenda – Would love to hear more about your adventure with young people overseas. There is just something about young people seeing the world with a more global, full, realistic perspective that challenges us to live more fully for others. Your leading them, I am sure, changed lives in a BIG way!

Missabeth – So glad to have you here, reading.

Barbie – Me too! ๐Ÿ™‚ Can I join her? Lol

  4. Oh how precious! Thank the Lord that some children just get it. It’s the crazy adults that get in the way of thinking “logically” that derail a young persons dream of conquering the world. I believe that is why Jesus instructed us to have a chid like faith.

  5. Sandra – Thanks for visiting!

Brownie – They do..”get it”..don’t they? While us “adults” often struggle. Oh, make us like children, dear Lord. Make us like children!

  6. Oh, wow. Wow, wow, wow, Jen. Your girl is something special. And so are you. What a brave mamma you are, trusting God this way. Beautiful stuff. Praying for you all. Falling in love is a wonderful thing…
